Cain Vineyard & Winery Tasting

310 Lorton Avenue, Burlingame 94010

Founded in 1980 atop Spring Mountain, Cain Vineyard & Winery sought to explore the world of Bordeaux varietals in Napa Valley. They quickly decided that, instead of the common practice in Napa of producing a varietally specific wine (e.g. Cabernet Sauvignon), they would focus on the much older tradition of blending those grapes together to make a more harmonious and fulfilling wine. After nearly a decade of planting and farming the vines, the first vintage of Cain Five, the 1985, was released. Immediately met with praise by sommeliers and collectors, Cain Five continues to be their most iconic and historic wine, utilizing fruit exclusively grown on their Spring Mountain vineyard. Devoted exclusively to blends of the classic Bordeaux varietals, Cain Five is joined by Cain Cuvée, a lighter styled blend that combines two vintages for complexity and freshness, and Cain Concept, sourced from fruit grown on the classic Napa benchland, generally considered to be among the best in the valley. Tragically, in 2020 the winery was completely destroyed in the fires that scorched so much of Napa, taking with it the entirety of the 2019 and 2020 vintages but leaving behind the most precious resource: the vineyard.

Age worthiness is a hallmark of Cain and we’ll taste older vintages of both the Concept and Cain Five to illustrate.
